So it’s been a few days since the release of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, the album that has been causing much buzz on the web. Not only is it the first album since Hail To The Thief, it’s also the first album Radiohead has brought to us since having fulfilled their quota with EMI. Which of course brings us to the part of it that is making the most news… the album was released online and at a cost of “it’s up to you”. No, that wasn’t a typo or an text editing transmisplacement mistake. They are letting you pay whatever you want to for a download of the album. Of course, if you are like me and a lot of other fans, you would be surprised to learn that the download has a low bitrate of 160kbps. Not so cool if you ask me, I am slightly offended by it actually. But I could never actually be angry AT Radiohead. As I’ve told people before, a lot of their music is tied to both my best and worst memories over the last several years.

Much like the last album, I didn’t neccesarily enjoy this or get excited the very first time I heard it. But with each listen I love it more and more. Their music is simple yet intricate, and I’m sure I speak for many fans when I say that you learn to appreciate a lot of the elements that are there as you become comfortable with the whole of what’s going on in the recordings. A good friend of mine speaking on this and related topics had this to say: “The rule is listen to a radiohead record until you love it, and I’m almost there. ”

With that said, and that I really do enjoy the entire album now, one piece stands out. Videotape. Videotape is the reason I look forward to new albums. Every so often there comes a release containing a song that I want to listen to over and over and over again. Videotape is fantastic. Very warm and magnificent yet unbelievably simple. It’s not too often these days that I hear something that doesn’t seem to need to hide behind a wall of studio gimmicks, noise and countless layers of sound to mask the fact that it COULD be better. Videotape is just good and is the mark of the true artisans i’ve known RH to be.

Well, apparently having this thing was a bad idea. I’ve have never written anything of worth here and it’s only been posted to a couple of times over the course of many months. Maybe that will change. I’d like to think so, but probably not. The problem isn’t that I don’t have things to say or a shortage of cool places or things i’ve enjoyed and could share here… I just never think to take it to the so-called “blog”. I never intended for this to be any sort of regular thing, just a once-in-awhile “here’s what adam is up to now” thing. But maybe I’ll do something new with it. Perhaps it would be a good exercise to comment on something on a regular basis or feed you reports from the front lines.

Anyway, the strange photo art is me being bored waiting for some downloads and deciding to screw around with Photo Booth and some scribbly art tools. I’ve had an obsession since my school kid days… blacking out the eyes of people in catalogs and photographs. People look so empty and spooky with their eyes gone.

There is this pepper they apparently use to cure stomach issues in India and they are saying it was named the world’s hottest pepper. This means that I can no longer freely exclaim that I have, as a child and adult, always taken pride in eating the hottest pepper in the world like candy.

It is called the “bhut jolokia” or the ghost chili. I think my favorite part of the article is this quote:
“When you eat it, it’s like dying.”

I’ve never been hungrier in my life. Someone get me one of these things. I’m dying to try it.

Well, it’s obvious that i’m either too lazy to write or that I lead a boring life. Or both at times. Here I am again, this time refusing to make empty promises to write more frequently in the future. Instead, maybe i’ll surprise you sometime.

However, several weeks of my time spent not updating here can be excused. I will give you the shortened version of why I suggest anyone who depends on internet access in their life should maybe not bother trying to settle in Germany. Unless you have need of a raise in blood pressure and have too much time on your hands with no urgent need to access the internet for anything.

Long story short, I rented a flat in Berlin. The previous tennant’s internet was still active when I arrived and it remained for quite some time. The idea was that I’d find a new ISP and there would be a smooth transition… maybe a couple days downtime. With the help of a friend, internet was ordered through a well known German ISP. After weeks of little or no communication from them, they suddenly sent a letter stating that they were unable to provide internet access because they didn’t own the lines going into the flat, or something to that effect. Apparently in Germany, your landlord or yourself don’t own the wires and things that go into your place and the people that do get to decide how you use them. Companies with financial interests that is. So naturally they aren’t going to run out and help you sign on with a different company.

So, luckily the previous ISP still continued to provide service to the flat for awhile. But upon returning from a show and short vacation in Barcelona, it became obvious that there was no longer internet access available in my flat. The tennants decided to finally cancel the internet with no notice given to me. This part was unfortunate, but not the worst of the problem. After more searching done (thanks again to a German friend), a new ISP was found and internet was ordered.

In Canada, I remember it taking about 5 days maximum. It took over a month here. That’s right. Over one month.

Apparently companies are ok with letting you wait around for basic things like telephone and internet (it was telephone too, btw, not just internet) for long periods of time. What do they do during that time? I have no idea. If I was them, i’d probably be laughing at me. Halfway through, they sent the hardware via courier just to tease. Brand new router and box of adaptors and German-language instructions sitting around for a couple weeks teasing me. Then finally a technician comes on connection day, does some things and disappears. I was then supposed to set it all up and then wait for the indicater light to glow a solid green. Two days of torture. It was a bit like watching Sea Monkeys… remember putting the powder in the water and waiting for a kingdom of creatures to parade around wearing crowns and enjoying their tiny lives before your eyes? Yeah, it felt like that. I felt like an idiot, waiting for something to happen that I knew wasn’t going to happen.

Finally it’s discovered that even though the cable I had plugged into the wall was one that fit and connected fine, it wasn’t the correct cable. That package that showed up to tease me earlier on did not have what I needed inside. The cable that fit wasn’t the cable that was going to let me access the internet. I should point out that it isn’t as simple as “plug the cable in” here. Easy enough for someone to figure out, especially if they use gadgets for recording and things all the time. But i’ve never seen a more convoluted mess of wires, adapters, sockets and connectors used in conjunction to allow the use of something simple. A couple days has passed, a friend lent the unnecessary component so I can access the web in the meantime (thanks again!) and a new package is apparently on the way.

Laugh all you want, but for someone like me, being without internet or phone for even a week is hellish. Over a month really was a terrible hell. If you plan on living here any time, get working on your internet situation as early as possible.

PS - every internet connection i’ve had here was amazingly slow. I wonder how they get away charging you for this stuff. I really think nobody here knows what the internet is, they just resell it for fatcats in other countries who know all about it.
Imagine what it was like in the 80s where you are… and imagine what it would be like if suddenly one day, the internet was introduced. That’s what it feels like here - like everything is being retrofit and patched together to just barely allow the use of it.

I’m in Berlin now. I have been here for just over a month. Tractile is playing all over Europe (especially Italy and Germany at the moment). As i’ve told many a soul, the simple fact that there are more restaurants around the corner from me than in all of Sarnia made it a worth while move. It’s nice to be some place with things to do and places to go, all the while being able to be a hermit when desired and avoid civilization. The biggest perk to being here is probably access to the rest of Europe… (and Europe having access to me - playing shows and the like). Interestingly enough (or not), the most appealing and interesting things so far have been the discovery of different consumer products at the grocery stores and the like. Right up there though would be clubs that don’t even open until well after most North American’s bedtimes and the wealth of entertainment and talented musicians/artists playing every week. On the more mundane front, I miss having the quality of internet access we have back in Canada.

I purposely left my camera collection in Canada because of the space it would take up and the inevitable distraction they would become, not to mention huge drain on the time and wallet (development and supplies, etc). I hadn’t touched any of that stuff for months anyway.. I might have to cross over and buy something digital and compact soon though. Even though I don’t feel like it, it’s considered a crime by some to not take pictures of things when seeing the world like this.

Apartment hunting and visa fun is next. Plan on recording lots of new material as well. Things will be busy.

You can wake up now. The boring account of my last month is over. Exciting stories will surely follow…
